Miss McNeely was absent one day (looking back, so was Mr. Herner). We had a sub for Math, and out of nowhere, a stoned hippie pops his head into Room 300, and yells “Far Out.” Freaked the sub. For the laugh, I say, “Damn, that Scott Dawe has balls.” The next day, Miss McNeely comes back, beehive slightly askew, strange happy glow. Ron Burl recaps the hippie/Dawe story. Susie freaks, grabs me, then Burl, and escorts us to Shafts office. Turns out she took the story about Scott from the sub seriously, and squealed to Cassius. Tried to put Scott on double, open, probation. Ronnie and I had trouble keeping a straight face, it did not go well for poor Suze. It was not a good time to burden Mr. Shaft with two straights. I sent her roses the next day, but she still called my Mom. I would love if Mrs. Herner could make it to our 50th. I can’t think of anyone who gets more joy out of life, and who puts more joy into the life of others. God Bless you,
